Popular Vacation Villas
Crete is an island located in the Mediterranean in Southern Europe. One of the large collection of Greek islands, it lies close to Mainland Greece and Turkey. Directly East from Crete is Cyprus, and if you traveled East, you would come across Malta, which sits just underneath Sicily in Italy.
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, and the 5th largest out of all Mediterranean islands, with a total landmass of 8,450 kilometers squared. As well as having the largest landmass of all the Greek islands, it is also the most heavily populated, with a total of 600,000 living on this sunny haven.
The easiest way to get to Crete is to catch a flight that goes directly to the island. It is quite a popular destination, so flights are frequent and plentiful. If you don’t want to fly, it is also possible to catch a ferry from Athens on the Greek mainland, and travel across the Mediterranean sea.
Crete has several of its own airports on the island, so you can fly directly there from some destinations. The two main airports are located just outside the island’s capital, Heraklion, in the North of the island, which most flights are likely to come in and out of, with another airport further West in the popular city of Chania.
Crete is an island located to the South of the Greek mainland, where Athens resides. A flight between the two will take just under an hour, whereas if you would like to sail across the Mediterranean, the journey can take anywhere between 6.5 hours on the high speed ferry, and 17 hours. In terms of physical distance, you would need to cover just under 400 kilometers to get between the two.
Crete is absolutely jam-packed full of stunning scenery, incredibly old architecture and archaeological sites, and breath-taking beaches. You could very comfortably spend weeks exploring every corner of the island and making the most of your vacation. However, if you want to go for a week or so, you may not be able to see everything Crete has to offer, but you will be able to get a very good taste of the culture and atmosphere. No matter how long you are going to Crete, the best way to make sure you make the most of your time is to make a list of everything you want to see on the island, and organize your days so you can tick off as many as possible.
When is the best time to visit Crete?
Crete is at its most enjoyable in May and June, as well as September and October, when days are bright and warm without being overwhelming. During these months, the island feels calmer, making it easier to explore beaches, ancient ruins, and dramatic landscapes at a comfortable pace.
High summer brings hotter temperatures and a livelier atmosphere, particularly in popular resort areas, while the shoulder seasons offer a perfect balance of sunshine, nature, and a more laid-back island experience.
Food and drink in Crete
Food and drink in Crete are deeply rooted in tradition, simplicity, and fresh local ingredients. The island is famous for its Mediterranean diet, with dishes centered around olive oil, vegetables, herbs, and seasonal produce. Popular Cretan specialties include dakos (barley rusk with tomatoes and cheese), lamb and goat dishes, fresh salads, and handmade cheeses such as graviera and mizithra.
Seafood is widely enjoyed along the coast, with freshly caught fish, calamari, and octopus often grilled and served with lemon and olive oil. Inland villages are known for hearty, slow-cooked meals and generous hospitality.
To drink, Crete offers excellent local wines, traditional raki (tsikoudia), and freshly brewed Greek coffee. Meals are unhurried and social, making dining in Crete as much about the experience as it is about the food.
Crete is well connected by air, with Heraklion Airport (HER) and Chania Airport (CHQ) serving as the island’s main gateways. Both airports receive frequent flights from major European cities, especially during the spring and summer season.
For travelers coming from the United States, Crete is typically reached via a connecting flight through major European hubs such as Athens, London, Paris, or Frankfurt. From either Heraklion or Chania, it’s easy to continue your journey across the island by car, bus, or private transfer.
Driving in Crete is a great way to discover the island’s diverse landscapes, from beautiful beaches to mountain villages and historic towns. The main road network connects key destinations along the north coast, including Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, and Agios Nikolaos, making travel between popular areas relatively easy.
Away from the main highways, roads can be narrower and more winding, particularly in rural and mountainous regions, so driving with care is advised. Traffic is usually light outside the main cities, and having a car allows you to explore Crete at your own pace and reach quieter beaches and traditional villages.
Ferries are a popular and scenic way to reach Crete, with regular services operating from mainland Greece. The most frequent routes run from Athens (Piraeus port) to Heraklion and Chania, usually as overnight crossings that offer comfortable cabins and onboard facilities.
There are also ferry connections between Crete and other Greek islands, depending on the season. Traveling by ferry allows you to enjoy beautiful sea views and provides a relaxed alternative to flying, especially if you plan to bring a car with you.
