The best time to visit Rethymno is from May to October when the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for beach days, exploring historic sites, and outdoor activities. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, while May, June, and September offer milder temperatures and fewer crowds.
Yes! Rethymno town offers beautiful Venetian architecture, charming streets, and great local food. It’s perfect for exploring history, shopping, and enjoying authentic Cretan culture.

Best time to visit Rethymno
The best time to visit Rethymno is during late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October), when the weather is warm, sunny, and ideal for exploring. These months offer pleasant temperatures for wandering the historic old town, relaxing on beautiful beaches, and discovering nearby villages without the intensity of peak summer heat.
Summer brings a lively atmosphere and long beach days, while spring and autumn reveal a calmer, more authentic side of Rethymno, perfect for sightseeing, dining outdoors, and enjoying Crete’s natural beauty at a relaxed pace.

Food and drink in Rethymno
Food and drink in Rethymno reflect the heart of Cretan cuisine, where fresh ingredients, traditional recipes, and warm hospitality come together. Local tavernas serve classic dishes such as slow-cooked lamb, grilled meats, fresh salads, dakos, and handmade pies, often prepared with fragrant herbs and generous Cretan olive oil.
The area is also known for its excellent local cheeses, including graviera and mizithra, as well as seasonal vegetables and honey sourced from the surrounding countryside. Along the coast, you’ll find fresh seafood, from grilled fish to octopus, enjoyed with simple flavors that highlight the quality of the ingredients.
To drink, sample local Cretan wines, traditional raki (tsikoudia), or enjoy a leisurely coffee in the old town. Dining in Rethymno is relaxed and social, turning every meal into a celebration of authentic island life.
Rethymno does not have its own airport, but the town is easily reached by flying into one of Crete’s two main airports.
Heraklion International Airport (HER): About 75–90 minutes by car from Rethymno, this is the closest and most convenient airport. It offers frequent flights from major European cities and connections from the United States via European hubs such as Athens, London, Frankfurt, and Paris.
Chania International Airport (CHQ): Roughly 90–110 minutes by car, Chania Airport is another excellent option, especially if you’re exploring western Crete or arriving on a specific flight.
From either airport, you can reach Rethymno by car rental, shuttle, taxi, or bus, enjoying scenic island views along the journey.
Driving in Rethymno is a convenient way to explore both the historic town and the surrounding countryside. In Greece, driving is on the right-hand side, and the main coastal road linking Chania, Rethymno, and Heraklion is generally well maintained and easy to follow.
Within the old town, streets are narrow and often pedestrian-only, so it’s best to park outside the historic center and explore on foot. Rural and mountain roads around Rethymno can be winding and narrow, with sharp bends and occasional steep sections, so driving with care is advised.
Traffic is usually light outside peak summer months, and having a car allows you to discover traditional villages, hidden beaches, and scenic mountain routes at your own pace, making driving in Rethymno both practical and rewarding.
Trains: Crete does not have a train network, so rail travel is not an option for reaching Rethymno.
Buses: Buses are a reliable and affordable way to travel to and from Rethymno. The KTEL bus service operates regular routes along the north coast of Crete, connecting Rethymno with major cities such as Heraklion to the east and Chania to the west. These buses run multiple times daily and are a good option if you prefer not to drive.
Buses also serve local destinations around Rethymno, including nearby beaches and villages, making it easy to explore the region using public transport. Just be sure to check timetables in advance—frequencies can vary by season.
