St Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) is the closest airport to Clearwater, at just 7.9 miles away. Tampa Airport (TPA) is also very close by, at 16.3 miles.
There is plenty of parking near Clearwater Beach, with a mixture of public garages and on-street parking available. All parking is metered. The biggest and most convenient parking area for Clearwater Beach is North Beach Parking Plaza, at 490 Pointsettia Avenue. Try to get to Clearwater Beach early, particularly on holidays and weekends, because parking spaces fill up fast.
On the vast majority of Clearwater Beach, dogs are not allowed. However, if you go to the north end of the beach, to the residential area, dogs are allowed on leashes in certain sections.
Red tide is the term used to describe a concentration of a harmful algal bloom that discolors the surface of the ocean with a rusted red and has harmful effects on native marine life and ecosystems. It can cause skin and eye irritation and breathing difficulties among humans. The coast of Florida has been badly impacted by the effects of red tide in recent years, including Clearwater Beach. It’s worth checking out current beach conditions online before your visit, particularly if you suffer from a respiratory condition.
With around 1.4 million of the scaly critters living in Florida, it is not uncommon to see alligators in Clearwater. Almost all encounters with these reptiles pass completely without incident, and as long you follow the golden rule of never approaching, touching, or bothering a gator, you should have no problem.
There are several species of sharks living in the ocean off of Clearwater Beach, including reef sharks, hammerheads, and tiger sharks. You are very unlikely to encounter one, as they generally prefer the deeper water further out to sea.
There are jellyfish at Clearwater Beach. Look out for a purple flag flying on the beach; this warns of dangerous marine life in the area.
