Fuerteventura was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2009, thanks to its unique landscapes and natural beauty.

Fuerteventura is one of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, about 97 km off of the northwest coast of Africa.
Like all of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is volcanic and was formed by eruptions of under-sea volcanoes around 5000 years ago. As such, there are plenty of calderas on Fuerteventura.
Technically, the Canary Islands are all part of Spain, including Fuerteventura. Although they are a long way from the mainland, Spanish is the main language spoken on the islands.
What you want to do will determine the ‘best’ time to visit Fuerteventura, but, in truth, there is no bad time to take a vacation on the island. If you’re wanting to enjoy the warmest weather for sunbathing, sea swimming, and long beach days, then the summer months between June and September is the best time to visit Fuerteventura. Winter, specifically from December through March is the best time for winter sunshine, while spring and fall are perfect for getting out and about on walking or adventure vacations.
Fuerteventura Airport, also known as El Matorral (FUE) is located 5km southwest of the capital Puerto del Rosario.

Fuerteventura attractions
Fuerteventura’s rugged and otherworldly landscapes offer plenty of must-see excursions. The most famous are the mighty sand dunes of Corralejo. These are the largest dunes in the Canary Islands, stretching for miles along the coast, with sparkling seas and dramatic volcanic rocks. It’s one of the island’s most striking landscapes and is easily reached by public bus from Corralejo, a popular tourist hub.
Another breathtaking destination is Isla de Lobos, a short water taxi ride from Corralejo. This protected nature reserve is perfect for snorkeling and swimming. Recent archaeological digs on the island have also revealed evidence of its Roman past.
Fuerteventura’s surrounding waters are part of a busy cetacean route, so there’s a good chance of spotting wild dolphins and whales on boat trips. The nutrient-rich seas are also home to stingrays, sea turtles, and other fascinating marine life.

Food and drink in Fuerteventura
Being surrounded by the ocean and heavily influenced by Mediterranean and African cuisine, the food in Fuerteventura is varied and delicious. A local delicacy is papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes), a moreish snack or appetizer that has become a Canarian food staple. They are often served with the signature sauce, mojo picon, which is made with olive oil, garlic, vinegar, cumin, and paprika, and can be served with almost anything.
Popular restaurants in Fuerteventura include La Villa in Villaverde, El Bounty Puerto De Rosario, which is known for delectable seafood platters, and The Ugly Duckling in Corralejo, where you can enjoy fine Scandinavian-inspired food.
