Lanzarote is a large island located off the coast of Morocco, on the African continent. It is one of the islands that makes up the archipelago known as the Canary Islands, which also includes famous destinations such as Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
Although Lanzarote is located on the African continent, it is technically a Spanish Island. So although it is not on the continent of Europe, it belongs to the European Union as part of Spain.
Gran Canaria is the second closest island to Lanzarote in the Canaries, with Fuerteventura lying between them. If you were to catch a flight between the two islands, the journey would take in the region of three quarters of an hour, and if you were to catch a direct ferry to make the crossing, you would leave from Arrecife in Lanzarote and make your way to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria in around five and a half hours.
Yes, drinking the tap water in Lanzarote typically won’t cause any harm as it is very clean. You can drink the water, use ice cubes in your other drinks, and use it for washing safely. However, it is normally desalinated seawater, so it may have a slight taste to it that you will notice if you drink a lot of plain water. Therefore, we recommend drinking bottled water where you can.
Lanzarote is on the far East of the Canaries, whereas Tenerife is nestled at the heart, with two islands, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, between them. A direct flight between Tenerife and Lanzarote takes about 50 minutes, whereas a ferry can take anywhere between ten and a half to thirteen hours, depending on the weather conditions and the ferry company you choose.
Lanzarote is considered quite a windy island, with plenty of breezes across the destination all year round. However, some months are windier than others, and the summer season is typically windier when the temperatures are higher. The least windy seasons are from September up until the spring time.
The capital of Lanzarote is Arrecife, a stunning port town located to the Southeast of the island. It is absolutely filled with charming streets, balmy breezes coming in from the North Atlantic Ocean, and cultural sights, such as the 17th-century church of San Ginés, and San José castle.
Lanzarote, as a bustling and popular tourist destination, has its own airport located just outside the island’s capital, Arrecife. You will either be able to get a direct flight from your starting destination straight into Lanzarote Airport (ACE), or connect in Spain, depending on where you are coming from.
