Yes. For tourists, Barbados is a typically safe destination, but as you would anywhere, you need to take the time to consider your surroundings. Keep your safety in mind and try not to visit the cities, towns and beaches at night time, and ensure you take all necessary precautions with your belongings.
Do I need any vaccinations for a trip to Barbados?
While there are no vaccinations required for a trip to Barbados, we recommend checking that you are up-to-date on your routine immunisations (tetanus-diphtheria, measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox).
This said, many people travel to Barbados without having any vaccinations and they don’t have any problems at all.
If you’re in any doubt, our advice is to consult your physician or visit a specialist travel clinic.
In total, the island covers a total area of around 430 kilometers squared - that’s 166 miles squared. It would take you about an hour to drive from north to south, and 50 minutes to drive from east to west across the widest part of the island.
If you’re traveling from Australia, Canada, France, Ireland, the UK or the USA you do not need a visa to visit Barbados.
Visitors from these countries can stay for a maximum of 6 months in Barbados without a visa, while other EU nationals can stay for up to 3 months. Visitors require a valid passport for the proposed duration of their stay, although no additional period of validity beyond this is required.
Nationals not referred to above are advised to contact the relevant high commission or embassy to check visa requirements for Barbados.
There are two main cities in Barbados, each within a forty minute drive of each other. Speightstown is further north, found along the west coast. Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, is also found on the west coast, towards the south of the island.
We recommend organizing a small amount of local currency before you arrive in Barbados, and getting the rest once you’ve settled into your vacation.
What is the local currency in Barbados?
The local currency in Barbados is the Barbadian dollar which is converted at the rate of 2:1 to the US dollar. You can use US dollars everywhere in Barbados but you’ll get your change in Barbados dollars.
You can bring your dollars and sterling to change at the banks in Barbados, or you can withdraw cash at one of the many ATMs on the island which tend to offer better rates than most currency exchanges (do check with your own bank regarding what charges they apply).
Almost all the shops and restaurants accept payment by US dollars and they are usually delighted to do so as dollars are in short supply on the islands. Most places also accept credit or debit cards, although there may be a small charge for using credit cards.
Is Barbados expensive?
Like other Caribbean countries, Barbados can be a lot of fun to visit regardless of your budget – it all depends on where you go and what you do.
In terms of accommodation costs, our villas in Barbados range in price from $135 per night for a 1-bedroom apartment in Christchurch, to around $9,000 a night for a sprawling 9-bedroom mansion in Gibbs Beach with room to sleep up to 16 guests.
The cost of food depends on what kind of groceries you buy and where you decide to eat out. You can stock up on groceries at one of the local grocery stores or supermarkets and dine at home, which may be cheaper than dining out.
If you do head out to eat you can spend anywhere from a few dollars on snacks to a few hundred dollars on a meal for 2 at somewhere like The Cliff, the island’s most famous restaurant.
A service charge of between 10–15 percent is typically added to your bill at restaurants.
Any additional tipping is at your discretion and should reflect the quality of the service you received. Tipping is always appreciated and the standard rate of tipping in Barbados is around 10%.
There is no need to tip bar staff or housekeeping staff but of course you can if you wish – a good tip for these services would be a few dollars. Visitors don’t typically tip the taxi drivers in Barbados as fares are quite high already. However, do feel free to tip if the service was very good. A few dollars should cover it for most journeys.
There are two main hospitals in Barbados and both of them are easy to get to from your villa.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is located in the island’s capital city Bridgetown, which is in the parish of St. Michael. This hospital is government-owned and is the main general hospital for the southern part of the island. In the event of a medical emergency you should head to this hospital, or dial 511.

The Bayview Hospital is not far from the QEH, located on the outskirts of Bridgetown, also in St. Michael. This privately-owned and operated hospital is much smaller in size than QEH and offers medical care in a number of fields including reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, orthopedics, dentistry, obstetrics and gynaecology.

Getting there Most our of Barbados villas are located on the west coast of Barbados just a short distance from Bridgetown. To get to either of these hospitals head south along Highway 1 and you’ll reach Bridgetown in around 15 minutes.
Healthcare costs You should contact your travel insurance company promptly if you are referred to a medical facility for treatment. Before choosing to be treated at a private facility, you should check their policies on pre-payment. Private clinics may not accept medical travel insurance as payment for treatment.
There’s an abundance of shopping in Barbados with everything from sprawling duty-free shopping malls to small jostling souvenir stores.
Bridgetown is the island’s capital with a concentrated hub of food markets, malls and specialist shops. Broad Street has the best selection of shops and department stores, and the surrounding side streets are home to colorful street vendors and small island stores.
On the outskirts of Bridgetown is Pelican Village, a scenic tropical-style shopping mall packed with small stores and souvenir shops selling locally produced arts and crafts.
For shopping, dining and entertainment all in one place, Crane Village in St Philip is a good choice with its 3,000 sq ft duty-free emporium as well as its many department stores, art shops, restaurants and bars. There’s also a weekly open-air market every Wednesday from 5pm to 8pm.
Other top spots for shopping in Barbados are Holetown in St James, abundant with gift shops, boutiques and art galleries. Just south of Holetown is the Limegrove Lifestyle Center with everything from jewelers, clothes shops and one-of-a-kind boutiques, to a cinema, a fitness center, a cosmetic clinic and a rooftop nightclub.
A short trip down to Christ Church parish in the south is the Sheraton Mall which boasts an extensive array of clothes shops, shoe shops, beauty parlors, book shops, electrical stores and home accessory stores.
Yes, there a few social taboos and laws you should know about when visiting Barbados.
Just like any other country, Barbados has a few local customs and laws which you should always adhere to.
- More than 95% of the population is Christian, and you should always show respect for places of worship.
- A ‘please’ and a ‘thank you’ is always appreciated when interacting with locals.
- Beachwear should only be worn on the beach.
- Topless sunbathing is illegal.
- Wearing camouflage or military clothing is illegal.
- It’s illegal to import or export more than $10,000 BDS ($5,000 US dollars). Drugs are illegal. Littering and prostitution are also illegal.
The best time to visit Barbados
When it comes to tropical islands in the Caribbean, for a lot of the year, you can expect soaring temperatures and unbelievable sunshine. However, they do experience a rainy season, and an increased chance of hurricanes at other times of the year. We recommend paying a visit between December and May to experience the best weather, with December through March being the best beach weather.
Eat out at the best restaurants in Barbados
If you’re searching for the best Barbados restaurants, then your first port of call should be the Platinum Coast, along the west side of the island, renowned for its huge variety of eateries. Mullins Bay, Paynes Bay, and Holetown, serve up authentic local flavors and cuisine from around the world.
Our favorite picks along the Platinum Coast include the incredibly fancy Fusion Rooftop in Holetown, the super-classy vibes of The Tides Restaurant, and the unbelievable views from The Cliff.
Further down the island, along the South Coast, not only will you find a thriving nightlife of elegant bars, but there are also plenty of dining options. Our favorites include Champers Restaurant Barbados, the Buzo Osteria Italiana, and the brightly colored Harlequin Restaurant.
Barbados is one of the easiest Caribbean islands to get to by air. Direct flights are available from Miami, New York, Boston, and Washington DC, with more than 60 flights per week. From other US destinations, you can make a connection in any of these destinations.
If you're traveling to Barbados from further afield, direct flights are available from several European cities, including London and Manchester. Flights with one stop are available from other European airports such as Amsterdam and Frankfurt.
The Grantley Adams is the main airport in Barbados and is where your flight is very likely to arrive into.
Driving in Barbados is pretty straight forward, so long as you remember a few road rules. You need to be 21 to rent a car in Barbados. You'll need your driver's license with you to prove your age and be issued with a local permit.
Drive on the left in Barbados, and adhere to speed limits that are active in both towns and rural areas. Finally, Barbados has an excellent GPS network that makes navigating the island easy, so check to see if your rental vehicle comes with one.
The only option for getting to Barbados by sea is to arrive on a cruise ship, as there is currently no ferry service to or from the island.
The best way to get from the airport to your villa is by car, although there are plenty of ways of getting around Barbados.
Your flight will arrive at Grantly Adams International Airport and from there you can pick up a pre-booked hire car, jump in a taxi, or take a private transfer to your Barbados villa. You could also take a public bus but that’s not a recommended option if you’ve got lots of luggage.
By car If you opt to hire a car, you can get the best deals by arranging car hire online before you travel. Many car hire providers operate from the airport so you can collect your vehicle when you arrive, and drop it back off before you depart. Alternatively you can arrange (usually free-of-charge) for your hire vehicle to be dropped off and collected at your Barbados villa.
If you’re hiring a car in Barbados, be aware that there are certain legalities involved in the hiring process. You need to have a valid driving license, and you need to get a visitors permit to drive in Barbados. These are issued by the car rental agencies for around Bds$10, and they are valid for two months from the date of issue. When driving in Barbados remember that cars drive on the left, that speed limits vary and that seat belts are compulsory. Also bear in mind that the roads can be winding and narrow, and other road users’ driving can be unpredictable.
By taxi Taxi drivers in Barbados know the island inside out, so taking a taxi is a hassle-free way of getting around. The downside is that taxis are expensive, with steep fares that are set by the government. Taxi ranks are easily accessible from outside the airport, and you can expect to pay anywhere between Bds$20-80 for a one-way trip from the airport to your villa.
By private transfer Private door-to-door transfers to and from the airport can be arranged by the Top Villas concierge service. The vehicle options include express shuttles, coaches, mini vans, VIP cars and wheelchair access vehicles. If you opt for a private transfer you’ll benefit from cheaper prices than a taxi, as well as a door-to-door service and no pressure to drive after a long and tiring flight.
By bus Buses aren’t a recommended way to travel from the airport, unless you’re traveling light, but they are a cheap way of getting around for day trips. The buses in Barbados are government-operated, and they are easy to identify with their yellow stripes and final destinations clearly visible on the front. Many Barbados vacation homes are located along bus routes, making them a convenient option for tourists. Bajan buses cost a flat rate of Bds$2 per one-way ride and you’ll need exact change.
Located in St Peter on on the west coast of Barbados, Mullins Beach is a popular mid-sized beach not far from Spieghtstown. Mullins Beach easy to reach, with a spacious car park just across the road. It is a great spot for sunbathers, with a narrow strip of pale sand that is shaded by Casuarina trees, and with loungers and umbrellas available to rent on-site. For those who prefer a more active beach day, Mullins Bay has calm shallow water that is perfect for swimming and snorkeling, especially for families with young children, The 'safe' areas of the water are roped off, while areas further out to sea are popular with jet-skiers and other water sports enthusiasts.
A bit of a hidden gem, Bottom Bay is regarded as one of the best beaches in Barbados. It is positioned on the island's southwest coast, a little further around the lower part of Barbados, away from the crowded beaches along the Platinum Coast. Bottom Bay has beautiful white sand, and a lot of it, stretching over quite a large area, and the best part is that the beach is usually very quiet, if not deserted, so you'll have this beautiful location almost to yourself! The waves at Bottom Bay can get quite large and lively, so it's more suited to sunbathing and spalshing about than swimming.
Close to the island's capital Bridgetown, Carlisle Bay is a popular crescent of white sand with great facilities. The beach is a beautiful natural harbor with yachts and fishing boats moored off of the sandy shore, with a landscaped esplanade running along the length of the beach. You can hire beach chairs and umbrellas, there is parking nearby, and there is a lifeguard on duty (unusual for beaches in Barbados). Carlisle Bay is a haen for marine life, and is therefore a great choice if you want to snorkel or dive, as well as being a top choice for families.
On the Platinum Coast of St James, Paynes Bay is a stunning beach that is easily accessible and very popular for it's natural beauty and calm, clear waters. A sweeping arch of gilded sand makes Paynes Bay a busy, but not ususally overcrowded spot, with beach chairs and umbrellas available to hire. Watersports are a popular pastime, with kayaking, sailing, jet skiing, and more available to try. One thing to watch out for: Paynes Bay is home to Manchineel trees, which are well-marked. Don't be tempted to shelter under them, and don't eat the Manchineel apples, as both the sap and the fruit is poisonous.
Also called Rockley Beach, Accra Beach is a real all-rounder of a destination in Barbados. Different sections of the beach provide calm waters and cresting waves, while evenings offer some of the best sunset views on the island. Accra Beach is fantastic for families. Those with young children will find the southern end of the beach to be the ideal spot, with a pool-like area protected by rocks that shelters the beach from waves. For those who want to try body boarding or other water sports, the rest of the beach gets some decent cresting waves.
On the sunny south coast of Barbados, Christ Church is a popular parish, home to the island's international airport. It is a great choice for those who want to enjoy beach days and lively nights, as Christ Church is also home to St Lawrence Gap, where you'll find incredible bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and shopping. Christ Church has plenty to entertain during the daytime, too, with the Harry Bayley Observatory, Banks Beer Brewery, and Barbados Golf Club all in the area.
Also known as the Platinum Coast for the fringe of idyllic beaches along the coastline, St James is the most exclusive destination in Barbados. The beaches are the prime attraction here, but there is far more to St James than sunbathing alone. It is a historic area, with buildigns such as St. James Parish Church offering an insight into the island's past. There's also Portvale Sugar Factory, one of the few working sugar factories on the island, the Sir Frank Hutson Museum, and numerous small villages to explore.
For a taste of undeveloped Barbados, St Lucy, situated in the north of the island has an untouched appeal. Although it is just along the coast, the rustling trees and rocky coast of St Lucy feel a world away from the resorts and bustle of the west coast. One of the top-rated attractions in Barbados, Animal Flower Cave is in St Lucy, along with Maycock’s Bay, the Fustic House Plantation, and St. Lucy’s Parish Church. It is a great place for surfing, with bigger waves and wilder waters than on other parts of the island.
A beautiful and historic parish, St Peter has got a little bit of everything. As well as world-class beaches, including the popular Gibbes Beach, St Peter also boasts a plethora of historic sites. he St. Nicholas Abbey Rum Plantation, the Arlington House Museum, and The Farley Hill National Park are top spots for exploring Barbados' story. Speightstown, the second-largest town on the island is also in St Peter, and is a charming place to visit, especially on weekends when bars, restaurants, and street vendors attract the crowds.
