Events in Orlando

If you need an extra-special reason to visit Orlando then why not come for its amazing annual events? Disney rules the roost in terms of holiday events with annual extravaganzas like Mickey’s Not so Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at its Magic Kingdom park. Seasonal events are a big deal too including the International Food & Wine Festival, and the International Flower and Garden Festival, both at Disney’s Epcot.

Disney World doesn’t steal the entire events scene though. Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights and Busch Gardens’ Howl-O-Scream are some of the scariest Halloween events in Central Florida. Universal is also home to one of the liveliest events with its annual Mardi Gras – a 2-month festival featuring colorful parades, music concerts and plenty of New Orleans-inspired fun.

There is plenty of festive fun to be found at both Disney World and Universal Studios. The former hosts magical holiday-themed events from November through December, while Universal Studios plays host to Grinchmas, a fun-filled celebration starring everyone’s favorite green grump.

There are some fantastic events at Legoland too, including Lego Star Wars days, the annual Brick Dash and the Kids’ New Year’s Party.

The Amway Center and Hard Rock Live are the place to head for music concerts. Plus there are dozens of sporting events happening at ESPN Wide World of Sports, the Amway Center, Orlando City Stadium and Camping World Stadium. Some of Florida’s biggest trade shows, exhibitions and conferences are held at the huge Orange County Convention Center on International Drive. Whether visiting for business or leisure, the Orange County Convention Center is one of the best event spaces in Florida, and attracts exhibitors from across the USA to show at events held there.

Getting to Orlando

Getting to Orlando is easy with an ever-growing list of non-stop flights to the region’s main airports, Orlando International Airport (MCO). Once you’ve arrived it’s a very easy drive from the airport to most of our resorts (around 30 minutes along Interstate 4).

Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) is the city’s other airport. It is smaller than MCO, and located to the northeast of the city. A lot of budget airlines fly into SFB, whereas larger airlines generally land at MCO.

You can fly direct to Orlando from many destinations, both internationally and from within the USA. New York, Nashville, Los Angeles, Denver, and Boston to Orlando are all popular domestic routes, and there are direct connections from international cities including London, Montreal, and Mexico City.

We highly recommend car hire for the duration of your stay as it makes it super-easy to get around. Your vehicle can be picked up and dropped off at the airport, or we can arrange for one to be on your driveway on arrival. Alternatively, our concierge team can arrange standard or VIP airport transfers.

Driving is the easiest way to get around Orlando, whether you choose to drive yourself down on a roadtrip or hire a car when you arrive at the airport. Most rental companies require drivers to be 21 years or older, and in possession of a full license. If you’re visiting Orlando as part of a Florida road trip, many people choose to craft a multi-destination itinerary in the Sunshine State, also stopping off in places such as Miami (3.5 hours drive), Clearwater (2 hours drive), Destin (6 hours drive), or the Everglades National park (5 hours drive).

Orlando toll roads

There are a number of toll roads in Orlando, which are maintained highways that drivers need to pay a small amount to use. There are a number of benefits to using toll roads. They have less congestion than non-toll roads, and have been designed to take drivers on the most direct route. If you’re travelling between the airport and Disney World or Universal Studios, you will have the option to use toll roads, which most drivers agree makes the journey much smoother, particularly around peak times. The cost to use a toll road varies depending on the route, but is generally around $5 per day. You can pay for toll roads when you pick up your rental car, by picking up a Visitor Toll Pass.

Other methods of getting around Orlando include public transport options, such as buses, Ubers and taxis, and theme park shuttles between some resorts and Disney World.

Multi-center Orlando stays

The Sunshine State has so much to offer, which is why many visitors choose to make Orlando just one stop on a multi-destination itinerary, taking in other Florida destinations, or even other places in the USA. You can easily drive between Florida locations, and pairing the thrills and spills of Orlando with the iconic beaches of Miami or Clearwater makes for a fun and varied trip. You could also make Orlando a stop on an itinerary taking in the amazing Everglades National Park in southern Florida, or head up the coastline towards the FLorida Panhandle to get a true taste of the diversity of the state. Direct flights between popular US destinations also make multi-center itineraries that pair Orlando with New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver, and more easy to organise.
