The best time to visit Big Island
The best time to visit Big Island is usually during the shoulder months of April, May, September and October, when the weather is warm, visitor numbers are often lower and conditions are well suited to beaches, snorkeling, hiking and sightseeing. Hawaii’s weather is fairly consistent year-round, with summer generally running from May to October and winter from November to April.
Spring is a great time for outdoor adventures, with comfortable temperatures for exploring volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, beaches and coastal trails. Fall is another excellent choice, especially for guests who want warm ocean conditions, sunset views and a more relaxed island atmosphere outside the busiest holiday periods.
Summer is popular for family vacations, beach days and snorkeling, while winter can be a good time for whale watching and lush scenery, though some areas may see more rain. Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, family trip or luxury stay in one of our Big Island vacation rentals, this Hawaiian island offers year-round beauty, with spring and fall providing the best balance of weather, value and quieter travel.

Food and drink in Florida
Food and drink in Big Island reflects Hawaii’s rich mix of island flavors, fresh local produce and coastal dining. From relaxed beachside cafés and seafood restaurants to farmers’ markets, coffee farms and traditional Hawaiian dishes, the island offers plenty for visitors to enjoy between beach days, volcano trips and scenic drives.
Local favorites include fresh poke, grilled fish, shrimp plates, kalua pork, loco moco, laulau, tropical fruit, shave ice and malasadas. The Big Island is also famous for Kona coffee, with coffee farms and tasting experiences offering a great way to sample one of Hawaii’s best-known exports.
Guests staying in Big Island vacation rentals can enjoy dining out in coastal towns or making the most of their own kitchen and outdoor spaces. Pick up fresh fruit, seafood and local produce, then enjoy relaxed meals on the lanai after a day exploring black-sand beaches, waterfalls, snorkeling spots and volcanic landscapes.
Flying to Big Island is straightforward, with two main airports serving different sides of the island. Most visitors arrive at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA) on the west side, which is the island’s primary airport and serves transpacific and interisland flights.
The island’s other main airport is Hilo International Airport (ITO) on the east side, which is useful for guests staying near Hilo, waterfalls, rainforests and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Hilo Airport mainly serves interisland flights, so some visitors connect through Honolulu before arriving.
Because Big Island is so large, it is worth choosing your airport based on where you plan to stay. The official Hawaii tourism site notes that some visitors fly into Kona and out of Hilo, or the other way around, to explore more of the island without doubling back.
Driving in Big Island is one of the best ways to explore Hawaii’s largest island, where beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes, coffee farms and scenic viewpoints are spread across a wide area. A hire car is strongly recommended, especially if you want to visit both the Kona Coast and the Hilo side during your stay.
As part of Hawaii and the USA, drivers use the right-hand side of the road. Roads around the main towns and coastal areas are generally straightforward, but journeys can take longer than expected because of island distances, changing weather and winding scenic routes.
Popular drives include routes between Kona and Hilo, coastal roads near beaches and scenic journeys towards Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Some remote beaches, mountain roads and off-road areas may require extra care or suitable vehicles, so always check route conditions and your rental car agreement before setting off.
Big Island also has a public bus service called Hele-On Bus, operated by the County of Hawaiʻi Mass Transit Agency. The service connects towns and areas across the island, including routes around Hilo, Kona, Waimea, Volcano and resort areas, making it a useful option for some local journeys.
Hele-On buses are currently free for all passengers until December 31, 2028, although passengers visiting Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park may still need to pay the park entry fee.
That said, Big Island is large and many beaches, scenic viewpoints and remote attractions are spread out, so most visitors still find a hire car more convenient. Hele-On can be helpful for budget-conscious travellers or simple town-to-town trips, but for flexible sightseeing and stays in Big Island vacation rentals, having a car is usually the easiest way to explore at your own pace.
