Best Month: Mid-October – This is Telluride’s off-season, meaning great deals on lodging, fewer tourists, and beautiful golden aspens before winter sets in.
So, whether you’re chasing powder, festivals, fall colors, or wildflower hikes, you'll find Telluride in Colorado a captivating year-round place to be.
Yes! Telluride Ski Resort is great for beginners, offering 23% beginner terrain and plenty of long, scenic groomers with breathtaking views of the San Juan Mountains.
New skiers can start at The Meadows, a dedicated beginner area with wide, gentle slopes that are perfect for learning the basics. The best time to visit Telluride
The best time to visit Telluride depends on what kind of escape you want, but overall, the most popular and beautiful times are winter for skiing and late spring to early fall for hiking and festivals.
Winter (December–March): If you’re after world-class skiing and snowy mountain scenery, this is the peak season. Telluride’s slopes are legendary, and the town has a magical, festive atmosphere.
Summer (June–September): For warm, clear days and stunning mountain hikes, summer is perfect. You’ll also find lively festivals, outdoor dining, and incredible alpine views.
Shoulder Seasons (April–May & October): These months are quieter and still beautiful, though weather can be more unpredictable.
If you want a single best window, December to March is ideal for ski lovers, while June to September is the best choice for hiking and outdoor adventures.

Food and drink in Telluride
Food and drink in Telluride blend rugged mountain charm with refined culinary experiences, making dining as memorable as the scenery. The town’s restaurants range from cozy après-ski spots and lively taverns to elevated, chef-driven kitchens, all reflecting Telluride’s adventurous spirit and local ingredients.
Expect hearty mountain favourites like smoked trout, elk tenderloin, and locally sourced bison, alongside seasonal farm-to-table dishes that highlight regional produce. Classic comfort dishes, from gourmet burgers to wood-fired pizzas, pair beautifully with craft beers from local breweries and rich, warming cocktails perfect after a day on the slopes or trails.
For drinks, Telluride offers craft cocktail lounges, wine bars, and ski-in après-ski spots where you can unwind with fine wines, whiskey flights, or inventive seasonal drinks. Whether you’re enjoying a relaxed lunch with mountain views or a refined dinner celebrating regional flavours, food and drink in Telluride offer a delicious complement to your high-altitude adventure.
Flying to Telluride is easy and convenient, with several nearby airports offering access to the town and surrounding mountains.
The closest airport is Telluride Regional Airport (TEX), which is about 10–15 minutes from downtown Telluride. This airport is the quickest and most direct option, but it has limited flight schedules.
Another great option is Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), which is around 1 hour 15 minutes from Telluride by car. MTJ offers more frequent flights and is a popular choice for visitors.
From either airport, you can take a rental car, private transfer, or shuttle into Telluride, enjoying scenic mountain views along the way.
Driving in Telluride is a beautiful experience, but it’s worth noting that the town itself is compact and often best explored on foot. The roads into the area wind through mountain passes, so driving is more about enjoying the scenic journey than quick travel.
You drive on the right-hand side of the road in Telluride, and while the main roads are well-maintained, winter driving can be challenging due to snow and ice. During the ski season, many visitors choose to rely on shuttles or private transfers, especially if they’re not comfortable with mountain driving.
If you do drive, a 4x4 or all-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended in winter, and it’s always wise to carry tire chains when conditions are snowy. Overall, driving gives you freedom to explore nearby areas, but in-town travel is often easiest by foot or shuttle.
One of the most unique and memorable ways to get around Telluride is the free Scenic Gondola, a signature experience that combines transportation with stunning mountain views.
The gondola runs between downtown Telluride and Mountain Village, offering panoramic views of the surrounding San Juan Mountains as you glide above the valley. It’s not just a mode of transport, it’s an attraction in its own right, perfect for visitors who want effortless access to lifts, shops, and dining, or simply want to enjoy the scenery from above.
Operating year-round and free for passengers, the gondola is an ideal way to travel between town and village without a car, and a beautiful complement to your Telluride stay , whether you’re heading to the slopes in winter or exploring trails and events in summer.
