The best way to reach Rhodes is by air, with direct flights from the UK to Rhodes International Airport (RHO), also known as Diagoras Airport. Located on the island’s northwest coast, about 14 km from Rhodes Town, this is the only airport on the island and the main gateway for international travelers.
Flights from the UK to Rhodes (RHO)
During peak season (April–October), there are direct flights from major UK airports, including:
London Heathrow (LHR) – British Airways. London Gatwick (LGW) – EasyJet, TUI Airways. London Stansted (STN) – Jet2, Ryanair. Manchester (MAN) – Jet2, TUI Airways. Birmingham (BHX) – Jet2, TUI Airways. Bristol (BRS) – EasyJet, Jet2. Edinburgh (EDI) – Jet2, Ryanair.
In the off-season (November–March), direct flights are limited, but connecting flights via Athens International Airport (ATH) with Aegean Airlines or Sky Express offer year-round access.

The best time to visit Rhodes
The best time to visit Rhodes is from late spring to early autumn, when the island is bathed in golden sunshine and the days feel effortlessly inviting. During May and June, the weather is warm but comfortable, perfect for wandering through ancient ruins, exploring charming old towns, and enjoying peaceful moments along the coast before the height of summer.
As summer fades into September and October, Rhodes reveals a more relaxed and atmospheric side. The sea remains wonderfully warm, the crowds thin out, and the island feels calm yet vibrant, making it an ideal time for long beach days, scenic walks, and unforgettable evenings dining under the stars.

Food and drink in Rhodes
Food and drink in Rhodes reflect the island’s rich history and Mediterranean soul, with dishes that celebrate fresh ingredients, bold flavors, and timeless traditions. Local tavernas serve classics such as moussaka, souvlaki, grilled meats, fresh salads, and meze, often made with fragrant herbs, olive oil, and sun-ripened vegetables.
Seafood plays a starring role along the coast, with grilled fish, octopus, calamari, and prawns served simply to let the flavors shine. Regional specialties include pitaroudia (chickpea fritters) and melekouni, a traditional sesame and honey sweet linked to the island’s heritage.
To drink, enjoy crisp Greek white wines, local varieties from Rhodes, or a glass of ouzo or tsipouro as the sun sets. Dining on Rhodes is unhurried and welcoming, turning every meal into a relaxed celebration of island life.
Rhodes is easily reached by air via Rhodes International Airport (RHO), also known as Diagoras Airport, located around 20 minutes from Rhodes Town. The airport receives frequent direct flights from major European cities, especially during the spring and summer months.
Travelers from the United States typically reach Rhodes by connecting through large European hubs such as Athens, London, Frankfurt, or Paris, before continuing onward to the island. From the airport, resorts and towns across Rhodes are easily accessible by car, taxi, or private transfer, making arrival smooth and convenient.
Driving in Rhodes is a popular way to explore the island and gives you the freedom to discover beaches, mountain villages, and historic towns at your own pace. In Greece, driving is on the right-hand side of the road, and most road signs are clear, with many written in both Greek and English.
The main coastal roads and routes connecting major towns such as Rhodes Town, Lindos, Faliraki, and Kolymbia are generally in good condition and easy to navigate. However, inland and rural roads can be narrow, winding, and steep, particularly in mountainous areas. These roads often lack barriers, so extra care is needed, especially at night.
Be aware of local driving habits, as drivers can be confident and sometimes overtake unexpectedly. Watch out for scooters, motorbikes, and pedestrians, especially in busy resort areas. Livestock may also appear on rural roads. Parking is widely available, though town centers can be busy in peak season. Overall, with cautious driving and awareness, exploring Rhodes by car is a rewarding and scenic experience.
Ferries are an important part of getting around Rhodes and exploring the surrounding islands. Regular services operate from Rhodes Town port, connecting the island with other Dodecanese islands such as Symi, Kos, Kalymnos, and Patmos, as well as routes to Athens (Piraeus).
Ferry journeys range from short day trips to longer overnight crossings, depending on the destination. Traveling by ferry is a scenic and relaxing way to experience the Aegean, with beautiful sea views and the opportunity to explore nearby islands while staying in Rhodes.
