The best rides at Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom has a varied mix of thrill rides, immersive attractions and family-friendly experiences, with plenty to enjoy across the park’s wildlife and themed areas.

For thrill seekers

If bigger rides are your priority, put these near the top of your list:

  • Avatar Flight of Passage
  • Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain
  • Kali River Rapids

Avatar Flight of Passage takes you soaring through Pandora on the back of a banshee, while Expedition Everest sends you racing through the Himalayas on a runaway train.

And if the Florida heat is getting to you, Kali River Rapids offers one possible solution, although there’s a very good chance you’ll come off considerably wetter than you started.

For families

Animal Kingdom also has plenty for visitors who prefer something less intense.

Family favorites include:

  • Kilimanjaro Safaris
  • Na’vi River Journey
  • Zootopia: Better Zoogether!

Kilimanjaro Safaris is particularly special because no two rides are exactly alike. You’ll travel through a large savannah where sightings can include giraffes, elephants, zebras, hippos and lions. Na’vi River Journey meanwhile takes a much gentler route through Pandora, while Zootopia: Better Zoogether! adds a colorful 4D experience inside the Tree of Life.

Animal experiences you shouldn’t miss

Wildlife isn’t just an extra at Animal Kingdom, it’s a huge part of what makes the park worth visiting. Instead of spending the whole day working through ride queues, leave some time to slow down and explore.

Kilimanjaro Safaris

This is the obvious starting point for wildlife lovers. You’ll board an open-air safari vehicle and travel through an African-inspired reserve where animals roam across large habitats. Because the animals decide where they want to be, each journey feels a little different.

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

After your safari, Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is an easy way to continue exploring at a slower pace. The self-guided route takes you through lush habitats and observation areas where you can stop for as long as you like.

Maharajah Jungle Trek

Over in Asia, Maharajah Jungle Trek combines animal habitats with detailed scenery inspired by ancient ruins. It’s quieter than many of the headline attractions and a good place to take a break from the faster pace of the park.

Rafiki’s Planet Watch

For another side of Animal Kingdom, take the Wildlife Express Train out to Rafiki’s Planet Watch. The area focuses more on conservation, animals and interactive experiences, and is also home to Bluey’s Wild World.

Kilimanjaro Safaris

Exploring Pandora – The World of Avatar

Pandora deserves to be treated as more than somewhere you rush through on the way to Flight of Passage. The floating mountains, unusual plant life and detailed scenery make it one of the most immersive areas at Walt Disney World.

What to experience in Pandora

Make time for:

  • Avatar Flight of Passage
  • Na’vi River Journey
  • Satu’li Canteen
  • Pongu Pongu

Flight of Passage is the headline attraction, while Na’vi River Journey offers something much calmer for families and younger visitors. If you’re still in the park after sunset, come back for another look. Pandora takes on a completely different feel once its bioluminescent landscape begins to glow.

Shows and entertainment at Animal Kingdom

The live entertainment at Animal Kingdom is worth building into your day rather than treating it as filler between rides.

Popular experiences include:

  • Festival of the Lion King
  • Finding Nemo: The Big Blue... and Beyond!
  • Feathered Friends in Flight!
  • Zootopia: Better Zoogether!
  • Bluey’s Wild World

Festival of the Lion King remains one of the park’s standout shows, combining familiar music with performers, acrobatics and colorful staging. Shows are also useful during hotter afternoons when everyone could do with sitting down for a while.

What’s changing at Animal Kingdom?

Animal Kingdom is currently going through some significant changes.

The former DinoLand U.S.A. area has closed and is being redeveloped as a new Tropical Americas land. Plans for the new area include attractions inspired by Indiana Jones and Encanto, with the redevelopment expected to bring another major change to the park.

If you’re visiting while construction is underway, it’s worth bearing in mind that part of the park will look and feel different from older maps and guides.

Where to eat at Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom has one of the more interesting food selections at Walt Disney World. The restaurants draw inspiration from Africa, Asia and the fictional world of Pandora, so there’s plenty beyond standard theme park food.

For a sit-down meal

Good choices include:

  • Tiffins Restaurant
  • Yak & Yeti Restaurant
  • Tusker House Restaurant

Tiffins is one of the park’s more refined dining experiences, while Yak & Yeti is a popular option if you’re exploring the Asia section.

For character dining

If meeting Disney characters over a meal appeals, look at:

  • Tusker House Restaurant

It’s particularly convenient for families who want to include a character experience without adding another stop elsewhere in Walt Disney World.

For something quicker

When you’d rather get back to exploring, try:

  • Satu’li Canteen
  • Flame Tree Barbecue
  • Harambe Market
  • Yak & Yeti Local Food Cafes

Satu’li Canteen fits perfectly into a visit to Pandora, while Harambe Market makes a natural stop before or after Kilimanjaro Safaris. For more dining ideas, take a look at our guide to the best Disney World restaurants.

Animal Kingdom tickets

You’ll need valid Walt Disney World theme park admission to enter Animal Kingdom. The main thing to decide is whether you want to make Animal Kingdom your only park for the day or combine it with somewhere else.

1 Park Per Day tickets

A 1 Park Per Day ticket lets you visit one of Walt Disney World’s four theme parks on each valid day:

  • Animal Kingdom
  • Magic Kingdom
  • EPCOT
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios

If it’s your first visit to Animal Kingdom, spending the entire day here is a good option. You’ll have much more time for the safari, trails, shows and Pandora instead of concentrating only on the biggest rides.

Park Hopper tickets

The Park Hopper option lets you visit more than one Walt Disney World park on the same day. For example, you could spend the morning exploring Animal Kingdom and then head elsewhere later in the day. This tends to suit repeat visitors or longer vacations where you want a little more flexibility.

Top Villas guests can also get help arranging Disney World tickets alongside their accommodation.

When is the best time to visit Animal Kingdom?

Animal Kingdom is especially affected by the weather because so much of the park is outdoors. You’ll spend plenty of time walking between attractions, exploring trails and watching animals, so cooler days can make a noticeable difference.

Visiting in winter

Winter is a great choice if you prefer milder conditions. Walking around the park can feel much more comfortable, and the cooler weather is well suited to spending extra time exploring the safari and wildlife trails.

Visiting in spring

Spring brings warmer temperatures without necessarily reaching the intensity of midsummer. It’s a good season for taking advantage of Animal Kingdom’s outdoor experiences, although spring break periods can bring busier days.

Visiting in summer

Summer means heat, humidity and the possibility of afternoon showers. An early start is particularly worthwhile. Head for outdoor experiences such as Kilimanjaro Safaris first, then save shows, restaurants and other indoor stops for the hotter part of the afternoon. Packing sunscreen, water and a lightweight poncho can also make the day much easier.

Visiting in fall

Fall can offer a nice balance after the main summer vacation period. Temperatures remain warm, but selected weeks can feel less hectic once schools are back in session. It’s still Florida, though, so warm weather and rain remain part of the picture.

Animal Kingdom at Christmas

Animal Kingdom has its own take on the festive season. Rather than trying to recreate the traditional Christmas feel of Magic Kingdom, the park blends seasonal touches with its wildlife theme.

One highlight is the Merry Menagerie, featuring beautifully crafted winter-animal puppets around Discovery Island. Festive decorations and character touches appear elsewhere too, making Animal Kingdom a fun addition to a Christmas Disney vacation without losing its distinctive atmosphere.

How much time do you need at Animal Kingdom?

For a first visit, allow one full day. There may be fewer rides than at some of the other Disney parks, but once you add safaris, wildlife trails, shows, restaurants and time exploring Pandora, the day fills surprisingly quickly.

If you have one day

Prioritize the experiences you care about most. These may include:

  • Avatar Flight of Passage
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris
  • Expedition Everest
  • Na’vi River Journey
  • Festival of the Lion King

Then use the rest of the day for animal trails, food and anything you discover along the way.

Can you do Animal Kingdom in half a day?

You can, especially if you’ve visited before. But for a first-time visitor, a half day means skipping much of the slower-paced wildlife and exploration that makes Animal Kingdom different from the other Disney parks.

Tips for planning your Animal Kingdom day

Animal Kingdom works best when you don’t treat it like a race from one ride to the next.

Do the big attractions early

Choose your top two or three attractions before you arrive and tackle those first. For many visitors, that means Flight of Passage, Kilimanjaro Safaris and Expedition Everest.

Give the wildlife some time

It’s easy to concentrate on rides and accidentally rush past the animal trails. Try to fit in at least one walking trail and spend some time simply exploring the habitats.

Save a show for the afternoon

A live show gives everyone a chance to sit down and escape the hottest part of the day. It’s an easy way to break up several hours of walking.

Don’t rush Pandora

Ride Flight of Passage, but don’t immediately leave afterwards. Walk through the area, try something at Satu’li Canteen and return after dark if your schedule allows.
