Best US States for a Family Road Trip

What Makes a Great Road Trip State?

There’s something about a family road trip that still feels unbeatable.

Windows down. Snack wrappers piling up in the footwell. Kids spotting something random out the window every five minutes and demanding a stop. One minute you’re driving through mountains, the next you’re pulling over at a roadside diner or discovering a place you’d never planned to visit.

But not every US state makes road-tripping easy.

Some have brilliant attractions but huge distances between them. Others offer incredible scenery but unreliable weather or poor road conditions that can quickly turn a relaxing family trip into a stressful one.

So, we wanted to find out which US states genuinely offer the best overall experience for a family road trip in 2026. To do that, we analysed all 50 US states across a range of factors that matter most when travelling as a family - from the number of family-friendly attractions and UNESCO World Heritage Sites to biodiversity, road quality, meal costs and weather reliability.

Here’s what we found.

Which US States Are Best for Family Road Trips in 2026?

Key Findings From Our Best US Family Road Trip Study

  • The South dominated the rankings overall: Southern states accounted for half of the top 10, with Tennessee (1st), Florida (2nd), Alabama (3rd), Kentucky (4th) and Georgia all ranking strongly. Rather than the traditional West Coast road trip states leading the study, Southern states consistently performed best across affordability, biodiversity and weather reliability.

  • Nature-rich states performed strongly: States with high biodiversity scores frequently appeared near the top of the rankings. Alabama recorded 4,533 species, followed by Georgia (4,436) and Florida (4,368), making biodiversity one of the strongest common factors among high-performing states.

  • Smaller states punched above their weight: Once attractions, UNESCO sites and biodiversity totals were adjusted proportionally against land area, smaller states often outperformed larger destinations. Delaware ranked fifth overall, despite covering just 1,949 square miles.

  • Road quality had a noticeable impact: States with stronger road infrastructure generally ranked higher overall. Indiana recorded one of the strongest infrastructure scores in the study, with 78.9% of major roads rated in good condition.

  • Affordability had a big impact: Kentucky recorded one of the lowest average meal costs among the top-ranked states at $122.92 for a family meal for four, showing that strong-performing road trip destinations weren’t always the most expensive.

The Top Five Best US States for Family Road Trips

#1 Tennessee - The Best Overall State for a Family Road Trip

Tennessee took first place in our rankings thanks to its well-rounded mix of family attractions, scenic driving routes and reliable infrastructure. It also scored highly for road quality, with more than 74% of major roads rated in good condition, making longer drives smoother and easier for families. Not only that, but it promises 867 family-friendly attractions and 3,772 wildlife species.

Another major strength was affordability. Tennessee recorded an average meal cost of $132.20 for four people, one of the lower average meal costs within the top 10 states, helping families stretch budgets further across longer trips.

Its biodiversity score of 4,368 species was also one of the highest overall, reflecting the variety of ecosystems families can experience within a single trip.

Its combination of attractions, ecosystems and warmer year-round conditions helped Florida perform strongly across almost every category we measured.

Families planning a Sunshine State itinerary can browse a variety of Florida villas suited to everything from beach breaks to theme park-focused trips.

#3 Alabama - One of the Most Underrated Family Road Trip States

Interestingly, Alabama secured third place overall.

Combined with strong road infrastructure, with 74% of major roads rated in good condition, and relatively affordable meal prices, averaging $127.54 for a family of four, Alabama emerged as one of the best-value family road trip destinations overall.

Families can experience everything from Gulf Coast beaches and state parks to mountain landscapes and historic towns without the heavy traffic or costs often associated with more famous road trip states.

Its balanced performance across every category helped Alabama score consistently highly throughout the rankings.

#4 Kentucky - One of the Best Affordable US Road Trip Destinations for Families

Kentucky ranked fourth overall thanks to its affordability and accessible road trip routes.

The state recorded one of the lowest average meal costs in the top 10 at just $122.92 for a mid-range meal for four, helping make family travel more manageable financially.

From Mammoth Cave National Park and bourbon country to horse farms and Appalachian scenery, Kentucky offers a surprising amount of variety without requiring long, exhausting drives between stops.

#5 Delaware and Hawaii Tied for Fifth Place

Interestingly, two very different states shared fifth place overall.

Delaware performed exceptionally strongly when measured proportionally against its size. Its compact nature means families can experience beaches, parks, small towns and attractions without spending large portions of the trip driving.

Hawaii, meanwhile, ranked highly thanks to its huge concentration of attractions and UNESCO sites relative to its land area, alongside a weather reliability score of 69.5 and a biodiversity score of 5,229 species - one of the highest totals in the study.

While the style of road trip experience differs dramatically between the two, both states scored strongly for offering high-quality family travel experiences within relatively manageable distances.

If you're building a multi-island adventure, there are plenty of Hawaii villa rentals designed for extended family stays and slower-paced travel.

Why Are Family Road Trips Becoming More Popular in 2026?

Family road trips continue to grow in popularity as travellers increasingly look for more flexible, experience-led vacations.

For many families, road trips offer a way to see multiple destinations in a single trip while keeping control over budgets, schedules and pace.

They also allow for a more spontaneous style of travel.

Rather than staying in one place for an entire vacation, families can adapt plans as they go, stop at smaller attractions they discover along the way and build trips around a mix of outdoor experiences, food and culture.

Rising flight costs and growing interest in domestic travel have also contributed to more families exploring destinations closer to home.

Methodology

We analysed all 50 US states to determine the best states for a family road trip in 2026.

Each state was ranked across the following factors:

  1. Number of family-friendly attractions
  2. Number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites
  3. Biodiversity Index (total number of species)
  4. Average cost of a meal ($) - based on a meal for two at a mid-range restaurant (three courses, without drinks). For the purpose of family comparisons throughout this study, meal costs were doubled to estimate a family meal for four.
  5. Road quality and infrastructure (% of major roads in good condition)
  6. Average weather reliability (average temperature of the state across the year)

To create a more proportionally accurate comparison, we divided the number of family-friendly attractions, UNESCO World Heritage Sites and biodiversity totals by the total area of each state.

Weather reliability was weighted twice within the overall rankings due to its importance for safe and enjoyable family road trips. All metrics were combined into a final ranking score.
