On October 1 2021, Walt Disney World will be celebrating its 50th birthday! In anticipation of the big event, exciting changes are being unveiled across the entire resort, the majority of which are taking place at Epcot.
As Disney World begins to prepare for its golden anniversary, we are taking a look at some of the new attractions you can expect to see at Epcot over the next few years.
Although some of the new additions to Epcot have been delayed due to the park’s inevitable closure, there are still plenty of exciting changes in store for 2021 – and beyond!
What’s new at Epcot
Launched in 1982, Epcot was the second of the four theme parks to be built at Disney World. The park is currently divided into two themed sections, World Showcase and Future World.
Over 30 years later, Epcot is now due to undergo the largest transformation any Disney park has ever had!
On arrival, guests will be welcomed by a brand new entrance featuring improved pathways, vast green spaces, and an impressive water fountain. Although completely reimagined, this new area will still pay homage to Epcot’s original design.
The biggest change, however, will be in the layout of the theme park. Epcot has been redesigned and divided into 4 different neighborhoods. Each unique area will be filled with brand new attractions and experiences, all designed to take you on a magical journey through the park.
Home to Epcot’s iconic Spaceship Earth sphere, World Celebration will be the first neighborhood visitors will encounter in the park. The transformation of this area will closely reflect the first-ever plans created for Epcot. An acronym of Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, Epcot was originally designed to be a modern utopian city, based on a futuristic concept envisioned by Walt Disney.
This new area will be a touching tribute to Walt Disney and a celebration of his success. A beautiful natural environment, Dreamer’s Point will be home to magical gardens, an enchanted forest and a storytelling fountain. A peaceful place to reflect and relax, Dreamer’s Point will be overlooked by a brand new statue of the original dreamer himself, Walt Disney.
This new pavilion in World Celebration will be home to any live events at the park, as well as the world-famous Epcot festivals. An architectural masterpiece, this three-storey structure will also provide incredible elevated views of the park – the perfect place to watch the new night-time spectacular show!
The second new neighborhood within Epcot will be World Discovery. This futuristic area will focus on science, space and technology, so prepare yourself for an intergalactic adventure!
Guardians of the Galaxy – The Cosmic Rewind
The new Guardians of the Galaxy themed attraction will be soaring into Epcot’s World Discovery neighborhood, making its debut in 2021. Set to be one of the largest and most innovative roller coasters in the world, this is Disney World’s first Marvel attraction.
An expansion of the Mission: Space ride at Epcot, Space 220 is a brand new restaurant. An immersive culinary experience, a special elevator will take visitors on a journey to a space station. With a real-time perspective throughout, diners can enjoy their meal surrounded by incredible views of the earth – from 220 miles up!
Located in the entrance of World Discovery, the Epcot Play! Pavilion is expected to open in time for Disney’s 50th birthday. Designed as an interactive digital city, this pavilion will be full of games, activities and fun experiences. Visitors will have the opportunity to connect and create with some of their favorite Disney characters, both real and virtual!
The World Nature neighborhood will be dedicated to exploring the beauty and balance of the natural world, with a focus on environmental preservation. This educational new area will encompass Epcot’s already established Land and Sea pavilions.
Journey of Water
This is the first attraction to feature Moana at Disney World. Inspired by the film, the Journey of Water is a walkthrough experience representing the importance of the natural water cycle. Like Moana, visitors will be able to interact and play with magical water, as they follow a nature trail surrounded by lush vegetation, waterfalls and fountains!
The World Showcase at Epcot, is already a pivotal part of the park. A favorite with fans, there are 11 unique pavilions within the showcase – each themed to represent a specific country.
Despite all the new development plans for Epcot, fans don’t need to worry, this popular neighborhood will continue to be a celebration of world culture – although it will still be receiving a magical upgrade!
Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
One of the most highly anticipated additions to Epcot, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure will be located in the France pavilion. An immersive 4-D experience, this trackless ride invites guests to shrink down to the scale of a rat, as they race through a Parisian kitchen – complete with all the sights, sounds and smells!
Le Creperie Paris
In addition to the Ratatouille experience, the France pavilion will also be welcoming a brand new (rat-free!) restaurant, Le Creperie Paris. This new eatery will serve both sweet and savoury crepes, from a menu created by celebrity chef, Jérôme Bocuse.
A brand new night-time spectacular, HarmonioUS will be one of Disney World’s largest-ever firework displays. The show will feature a combination of Disney music and imagery, reimagined by a range of diverse, international musicians and artists. With huge floating sets, custom-built lights and show-stopping pyrotechnics, this magical show will explore the impact that Disney music has had on the world, inspiring and uniting people from across the globe.
What else is planned for Disney World Orlando?
Due to the Disney World anniversary celebrations in 2021, most of the upcoming changes for Magic Kingdom will be purely aesthetic. The world-famous Cinderella castle has already received a royal makeover, turning rose gold for the big occasion!
The only new ride to be officially confirmed for Magic Kingdom in 2021, is the brand new Tron Lightcycle Power Run. Already the highest-rated attraction at Shanghai Disney World, this rollercoaster-style ride is expected to be extremely popular with theme park fans.
Based on the Tron movie franchise, the ride will feature a train of individual motorbike-style vehicles, which riders will board for a thrilling race through the digital world.
After undergoing major construction for the opening of the much-anticipated ‘Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge’ attraction, Hollywood Studios won’t be seeing that many big changes over the next few years. However, following the success of the new Star Wars land, Disney have confirmed at least one exciting new addition to the park, which is expected to launch before 2022.
An interactive adventure, the Galactic Starcruiser will give fans the chance to take part in their very own Star Wars story! This unique combination of both hotel and theme park attraction is the first experience of its kind.
Guests will be able to spend 2 nights aboard the Starcruiser, communicating with characters and completing exciting challenges throughout their stay. Every detail and experience onboard the spaceship will be fully immersive – including the dining and accommodation!
