Planning a last-minute trip to Barbados

Barbados in December

A last-minute vacation always sounds like a good idea. But as tempting as quickly packing your bags and setting sail for sunny shores is, it’s important to check a few things out before you go. That way, you can avoid any disasters before you get to the airport!

Barbados is a brilliant place for a quick getaway. The sun-soaked Caribbean island is packed with luxurious accommodations and white sandy beaches to enjoy.

Want to go there at short notice? We have compiled this handy guide to help you pull things together…

Before you go

Orlando Airport

When planning any last-minute vacation abroad, it’s important to check out which travel documents are required, and whether your current ones are valid.

Do you need a visa for Barbados?

For most tourists visiting Barbados, no visa is required. Those from the USA, UK and Australia are all free to travel without obtaining any further documentation.

If you are not sure whether you will require a visa, it is best to check on the official Barbados Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

What about flights?

Flights are a key part of a booking a last-minute trip. The best approach is to be as flexible as possible with your dates of travel, as cheap deals are often still available if you are working with a wider timeframe.

Other money-saving tips to explore include booking two one-way flights rather than a return, or flying to/from an alternative airport. With some trial and error, you will hopefully find a deal that suits you – and save some cash.

Which vaccinations do I need for Barbados?

Do you need to worry about malaria in Barbados? The answer is no. Strictly speaking, no vaccinations are required to enter the country. However, it is worth visiting your GP before traveling, especially if you are pregnant or have a pre-existing medical condition.

Passport

Visitors also need to make sure their passports are valid for the entire duration of their trip. This is an easy thing to forget to check – so don’t leave it until the airport!

Unlike many destinations, Barbados does not require passports to be valid for 3-6 months from your date of travel. However, we would always recommend updating your passport as quickly as possible when the expiry is close.

When to go

If you’re planning a last-minute trip to Barbados, then you’re probably hoping to travel at the earliest possible opportunity! However, as with any destination, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the climate and season you are heading into.

Barbados does have a rainy season, which generally lasts from June through November, whilst hurricanes also can impact the island.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that there are months to avoid – but you can get a better idea of which time will suit you best with our guide on the Timing your trip to coincide with events

Best festivals in Barbados

A last-minute trip to Barbados can be made even more magical if you time your vacation to take in some of the island’s famous events and festivals.

Whether it’s the Crop Over music party in April, the Barbados Food & Rum Festival in mid October, or the Run Barbados fitness event in December, the Bajan calendar is bound to offer something to your taste.

Maybe you can time your trip to take in some cricket? The island often hosts international one-day matches, T20 games and Tests for the West Indies national team. You could enjoy a day of world-class sport whilst sitting in the sun and enjoying a cold beer. Sounds good to us!

Other tips

Some other things to consider when planning a last-minute trip to Barbados include:

  • Consider making your stay a longer one. Sometimes costs can drop if you are renting your vacation home for an extended period – eg 12 days as opposed to 10 days could prove cheaper, so it’s worth a check.
  • Be patient. If you are flexible with when you travel, you could land a great late price. However, this strategy is risky, so you need to consider what is more important to you; traveling quickly or getting a cheaper deal.
  • Keep your options open. If you are using refined search terms when looking for accommodation, try dropping one of your requirements. It could open up a great deal.
