Rain is unlikely, and the sunshine is plentiful, meaning the beaches will welcome visitors with open arms, as well as the ruins and adventure parks around the destination. Around Christmas time, those who want to take advantage of the break from work and school may be traveling, so keep that in mind if you want to visit Cancun in the festive season. Earlier in December may prove more peaceful and quieter in terms of visitor numbers, but spending the holidays in Cancun is certain to be a delight too.

Sargassum is no longer building up along the shore, so the water is now clear and perfect. Lastly, the temperature of the water still remains consistently high, despite being winter, and maintains  beautiful, bath-like heat that means long swimming sessions will be comfortable.

Generally speaking, hurricanes in Cancun are actually rare. So don’t let this fact put you off snagging the best deals in Cancun’s low season – just keep it in mind as a possibility when you book.

So, when is the best time to go to Cancun?

palm trees on cancun beach at sunset

Although it might seem a little counterintuitive, we think the best time of year to visit Cancun is actually in the winter months. There is minimum rain at this time of year, and the temperatures remain very high, as is normal for the region, but without being suffocatingly humid or overwhelmingly powerful. Sargassum, the build-up of seaweed along the Caribbean coast, is also not an issue at this time of year, meaning the beaches are clear and idyllic.

Spring and fall are also good times to travel, though you need to be prepared for a higher risk of rain, and in spring, a highly likely chance that some of the beaches that aren’t protected with netting may experience a large build-up of sargassum. The temperatures are higher than in winter, but still without the peak heat of the summer. These are great seasons to spend vacations on both the beach, and exploring iconic cultural sites near Cancun, such as Tulum or Chichen Itza.

We would recommend avoid traveling in the summer months if possible, between June and September, as rainfall is much more frequent and heavy, and the temperatures are extremely high. If you do wish to travel in summer, you will be able to take advantage of the best deals on flights and accommodation, and be able to enjoy Cancun with significantly reduced tourist numbers – just ensure you have your waterproofs!
