Some of the very best resorts and beaches are located along the exclusive west coast, aptly nicknamed the Platinum Coast. This upmarket area is home to exquisite powdery-white beaches overlooked by some of the most exclusive vacation rentals in Barbados. There are world-class restaurants here too, plus first-rate golf courses, duty-free shopping malls and a handful of charming local parishes.

The south coast is more heavily developed than the rest of the island, but its beaches are excellent and varied. This end of the island is ideal for watersports, especially surfing, it’s also cheaper to stay here than on the west coast. If you head to the tranquil east you’ll find unspoiled bays by the dozens, with a wave-pummelled coastline than defines divine. While if you venture into the island’s interior, there are plantation houses, botanic gardens and underground caves to explore.
Bridgetown is the capital city, and although it’s not especially appealing, the nearby historic Garrison area is well worth a visit. It has recently been placed on Unesco’s World Heritage List, and offers guided tours which are worth every cent. Away from the capital are charming towns like Speightstown, Holetown and Oistins. Here you will find everything from great shops, restaurants and nightlife, to historic monuments, churches and art galleries.
A great time to visit Barbados is during its famous festivals and street parties. These are occasions when visitors can get a true taste of local culture, with plenty of fun guaranteed. Crop Over is the biggest and most popular festival, taking place through the summer months. The Barbados Food, Wine and Rum Festival in November is another don’t miss event. There’s also a Friday night fish fry in Oistins each week, where you can eat fried fish, drink rum punch and dance to calypso music until the early hours.
